Issued to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the end of the reign of King George III, the 2020 Gold Proof Half Sovereign is distinguished by a special George III Royal Cypher privy mark. Struck by The Royal Mint in 22 carat gold to Proof standard, the coin connects the modern Sovereign series with one of the most significant monarchs in British numismatic history.
The obverse features the fifth definitive coinage portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. The reverse showcases Benedetto Pistrucci’s iconic depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, a design synonymous with the modern Sovereign and derived from Pistrucci’s celebrated original introduced in 1817. The addition of the George III Royal Cypher gives this 2020 issue its distinctive commemorative character.
With a limited issue presentation of just 2,000 worldwide, the 2020 Half Sovereign is a notably limited modern Proof release. Combining the special George III anniversary cypher, Pistrucci’s historic Sovereign design and The Royal Mint’s Proof finish, this example is presented in its original Royal Mint box with Certificate of Authenticity.
