Description

The 1995 Gold Proof Half Sovereign brings together Raphael Maklouf’s royal portrait and Benedetto Pistrucci’s classic Saint George reverse in the smaller Sovereign denomination. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR70 DCAM, combining the highest numerical grade on the Sheldon scale with the Deep Cameo designation for pronounced contrast between the frosted details and mirrored fields.

The obverse features Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on British coinage between 1985 and 1997. Depicting the Queen facing right and wearing the Diamond Diadem, earrings and a necklace, the effigy gives this issue the distinctive appearance associated with the later years of the Maklouf portrait series.

The reverse displays Benedetto Pistrucci’s enduring depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the date beneath the scene. The mounted saint and dragon form one of the most recognisable compositions in British coinage. Its intricate detail is complemented by the polished fields and frosted relief of the proof finish.

Struck in 22 carat gold and weighing 3.99 grams, the 1995 Proof Half Sovereign presents these established designs in a compact format. Its PCGS PR70 DCAM certification makes it a notable example for collectors assembling a graded Half Sovereign collection or exploring the royal portraits of Elizabeth II.
