Description
The 1992 Gold Proof Half Sovereign pairs Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the classic Saint George and the dragon reverse. Struck during the year marking 40 years since the Queen’s accession, it represents an established chapter in the modern Sovereign series. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by PCGS with the grade PR70 DCAM, combining the highest numerical grade on the Sheldon scale with the Deep Cameo designation for pronounced contrast between the frosted details and mirrored fields.
The obverse features Maklouf’s third definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, used on British coinage between 1985 and 1997. Depicting the Queen facing right and wearing the Diamond Diadem, earrings and a necklace, the portrait presents a formal royal likeness in the compact dimensions of the Half Sovereign.
The reverse carries Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the date beneath the scene. The mounted saint, flowing cape and fallen dragon form a composition closely associated with the Sovereign family. Its intricate relief is highlighted by the carefully prepared surfaces of the proof finish.
Struck in 22 carat gold and weighing 3.99 grams, this coin maintains the traditional Half Sovereign specification. Its combination of familiar royal portraiture, historic reverse design and PCGS PR70 DCAM certification gives collectors a finely preserved example from the Maklouf portrait era.
