Description
The 2023 Coronation Gold Proof Half Sovereign commemorates the coronation of King Charles III, marking the beginning of a new chapter in British royal history. This example has been authenticated and encapsulated by NGC with the grade PF70 Ultra Cameo. PF70 is the highest numerical grade on the Sheldon scale, while Ultra Cameo recognises pronounced contrast between the frosted design and mirrored fields.
The obverse features Martin Jennings’ crowned portrait of King Charles III, created for the Coronation collection. Depicting His Majesty facing left, the portrait distinguishes this commemorative issue from coins bearing his uncrowned definitive effigy. It provides a lasting connection to the ceremony held at Westminster Abbey on 6 May 2023.
The reverse features Benedetto Pistrucci’s celebrated depiction of Saint George slaying the dragon, with the date beneath the scene. First introduced on the modern Sovereign in 1817, the design brings continuity to an issue celebrating a change of monarch. Its intricate detail is complemented by the polished fields and frosted relief of the proof finish.
Struck in 22 carat gold to the traditional Half Sovereign specification, this coin combines a special crowned portrait with an enduring reverse design. Its Coronation association and NGC PF70 Ultra Cameo certification make it a distinctive example from the opening years of Charles III’s reign.
